New firmware broke my printer?

Last friday I upgraded the firmware on my CP64.  I used the printer before and after the upgrade and everything was fine.  Monday I tried to use the printer to find that BOTH my magenta heads are COMPLETELY DEAD!  I've tired multiple cleanings, cap fills, and restarting the printer, but nothing makes any difference!  I called my tech (who, of course, can't get here until next tuesday) and he doesn't think that the firmware would have anything to do with it.  I see where he coming from, but it seems strange that this thing worked nearly trouble free for a year and then this?  And I have never seen a head go COMPLETELY dead on any of the printers I have worked with.  Thoughts anyone?

i'd be really surprised if the firmware did anything, as it only talks to the nvram on the main board. does seem really strange though that both magenta heads have gone pop.

if you feel confident enough, swap a known good head into the magenta position, and remeber to change the drive voltages. if you can clip the line of well enought, then you might be able to aviod an ink charge, otherwise you'll need to perform one. then just try and print!

guess time - power surge maybe?? bad ink??

let us know the results, as i've never seen this happen before.

Well, here's the situation:  Having nothing other than coinsidence to do with the firmware upgrade, the magenta heads dried out purely because of a cap malfunction.  The magenta caps had accumulated some dried ink around the springs which prevented them from fully sealing around the heads.

Here's the drama:  Our usual (dealer) tech was not able to make it out here when we needed him, so we had to call CalGraph.  We generally use CalGraph for service on our Toucans and they are great.  But this time.. ugh!  He got here thursday and took all day (9am to 4:45pm) to recover the heads and clean the cap mechanism.  However, he failed to notice that he misaligned the black head in the process, thereby keeping the printer out of commission until tuesday (CalGraph was closed fri and mon for x-mas)!  I guess our lesson is that we'll wait for our usual guy next time

this is one of the problems seiko have yet to solve and it's a real stinker. the caps are sort of spring lodaed and rely on a littlew rubber gromit to allow the cap to return into an upper position to cap correctly. when ink gets onto this gromit, when the cap goes up in caused it to invert and never retunrs to it's correct state. thus the cap never properly works again until this is rectified. the simple solution is to cleans the gromit in the fluid and return baqck to it's original shape, other replace.

seiko need to sort this, as for a $1 part it causes $major problems..
