3M IJ40 series

Hi All

We have had our printer for about 4 months now and I find if I print on anything other than 180C and 8 pass 720dpi then i get pretty crappy results. I am trying to reprint a job that was origianally printed on the 180C but now is being done on IJ140 and the gradient on the image is coming through awful. Does anyone have any suggestions.

The gradient is not a banding issue just as it is vertical. It just doesnt seem to be soaking into the media

Any help would be appreciated!

140 is pretty cheap material, you get what you pay for. It might be a number of things. Check the 64 forum "anyone seen spots" for some ideas. It sounds to me like some of the same issues. Otherwise, post the following:

What RIP are you using?

What are your heat settings?

What profile are you using?

I am using Onyx 6.5 rip. I have bumped my heat settings up to 55/45/55 and that has helped a bit. the profile i am using i downloaded from the 3M website but i had to manually change it to do 8 passes on 720.

Do you recommend a decent 5 year vinyl? While controltac is fantastic and we would love to use it all the time, sometimes it isn't practical as you can't apply with water.

I guess this isn't the vinyl I was thinking of. I was thinking of the 160, but I tried to get information on the IJ40 and can't find anything. I'm not really sure what you mean by "can't apply with water". We apply controltac with water all the time and it works fine. What are you applying these graphics to?

Is the problem only with the gradient? Does the rest of the image print fine? It seems strange that the file would print fine in different areas and/or with a different material. This would lead me to believe that it is a RIP issue and not a problem with the vinyl. I use Postershop too, so maybe I could help you there.

We were applying controltac with water but we had an issue with a large job and as controltac is pressure sensitive 3M wont cover the warranty if it was applied with water, hence trying to go by the book.

Most things print ok and it is mainly the gradient. Nothing prints as well as controltac but i do think you are right you get what you pay for. I actually have had a good look at the file and it isn't the best anyway so that might be the problem.
