We are currently printing on a clear media with no white backer paper. Is there any way we can load the media without having to trick the sensors with tape?

not really because if the medai sensor can't see the media as it's too clear, then the only way is to trick the sensor with tape. you could try different light angles. by this i mean get a spot light and angle across the media, as this might be enough to cause the relevant shadow for the sensor to work.
